A portion of the proceeds benefited the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts
An auction of works from the collection of Dr. Irving Lipton – a collection that was, at one point, the largest collection of wood art in the world. In many cases, he acted as patron, providing funds to make works of art possible. He enjoyed being on the cutting edge of contemporary wood art, collecting the most recent explorations by an artist, while also commissioning works that would take them – and, by extension, the burgeoning field – to the the next level.
Dr. Lipton often loaned works for museum exhibitions, and today works from the Lipton Collection are in the permanent collections of a number of museums, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Minneapolis Art Institute, the Long Beach Museum of Art, the Honolulu Museum of Art, and Yale University Art Gallery.
Works by many of the artists in this auction are included in major museum collections. In fact, many of the works in the auction were considered by museums, but did not make the final cut.
