About Slack Key Guitar:

Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, or kiho'alu, is a musical tradition indigenous to Hawaii that developed in the 19th century following the introduction of guitars to the Hawaiian Islands. Native Hawaiians invented their own ways of tuning their guitars (hence the name), and adapted the new instruments to their already flourishing musical traditions. After being passed down aurally from generation to generation, it has become an internationally acclaimed art form.

Danny CarvalhoAbout the Artist:

Though only 25 years old, Danny Carvalho is no stranger to the stage. At age 14, he became the first slack key guitar player to be featured on National Public Radio’s nationally syndicated program From the Top. At age 16, he made the first of two appearances on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion. He has been nominated for a GRAMMY® Award and multiple prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano Awards (Hawaii’s GRAMMY® Awards). Carvalho’s music was also featured in Alexander Payne’s Academy Award-winning 2011 film, The Descendants. Danny has developed over the years into a versatile performer with strong musicianship and vocal and writing skills, delving deeply into a variety of musical styles and genres while not losing site of his beloved Hawaiian slack key roots – an artist who appeals to a wide variety audiences, both young and old.
