Greetings from Happy Valley!
I'm writing to invite you to attend the Opening Reception for upcoming solo exhibitions featuring works by Ojai artist Richard Flores, and also Terry Martin of Australia. The exhibitions will be presented June 30 - August 12, 2012. There will be an Opening Reception on Saturday, June 30, 2 - 5 pm. The public is invited to attend. Both Richard Flores and Terry Martin will lead gallery tours and discuss their work during the reception. If you are unable to view these exhibitions in person, you will be able to view them online, along with other information about our activities, at www.beatricewood.com.
The exhibition of works by these two artists represents our commitment to promoting local artists, while bringing internationally recognized artists to Ojai. Our exhibitions are shared on the Internet and in publications globally, allowing us to promote local artists internationally. At the same time, exposing the local community to the international art scene is an important part of our mission.
Richard Flores maintains a home in Ojai, while working as the three-dimensional studio arts professor at College of the Sequoias in Visalia, California, instructing courses in all levels of ceramics, sculpture, glass, and 3-D design. Flores has worked with a number of internationally recognized artists including time spent as one of Beatrice Wood's studio assistants.
"My work concerns challenging the basic and passionate connection I feel with the world and everyone in it while adventurously exploring the infinite possibilities of form, color, and texture creatively expressed through art," Flores says of his work. "I'm voraciously curious and fascinated with the way everything is connected. I am quite often surprised by what is revealed about myself when I look at my work or what others see in the work - things that I wasn't consciously aware of while making it."
Richard Flores embodies the commitment to both Ojai and the international art world that the Center embraces. Every year he takes his students to Europe to expose them to arts, architecture, and culture, but he also brings his students to Ojai for workshops at the Center, so that they can experience the unique environment here.
Terry Martin has participated in almost 100 exhibitions in Australia, Japan, France, Austria, Germany, and the United States, and his work is in important collections in these countries, as well as Holland, Spain, Britain, Canada, and Taiwan. He has written numerous articles and books on the field of contemporary wood art, has curated several exhibitions, and is often asked to give presentations at conferences internationally.
"Life is a wonderful adventure," Martin says. "My work takes me around the world to meet with old friends and make new ones. My life long love of trees has inspired me to work in wood, while not leaving the environment any poorer for it through a sensitive and sustainable approach. While I love to make simple shapes based on classical work, I also like to have fun and find it's very satisfying to challenge conventional rules."
I'm pleased to be able to bring Terry to the Center and share his work with the local community. Richard and Terry are both incredibly cerebral individuals with a great appreciation for humor. It is evidenced in their work, yet I encourage people to come to the reception to hear them speak.
