Previous Workshop
In conjunction with a Retrospective Exhibition, featuring sculpture and prints (August 22 to October 3) at Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts in Upper Ojai, artist Nina de Creeft Ward will be giving an Animal Drawing and Clay Workshop on consecutive Saturdays, September 19th and September 26th from 10 am to 4 pm. No experience is necessary.
The first Saturday session will focus on drawing and sculpting. Drawing is a wonderful way to study and retain information about animal forms and typical positions. Participants will meet Duke, a gray chinchilla rabbit, and learn or review some drawing techniques for capturing the poses of a moving or resting animal.

Participants will then work in clay to make small animal figures, which will be left at the Center to dry, be bisque fired, and picked up later.
Those who are able to come to both sessions will have the opportunity to glaze and Raku fire their work. While the Raku kiln is heating up, Duke will again be your willing subject for more experience sketching. Nina will also demonstrate some soft slab hump mold techniques to construct larger animal figures at both sessions.
Nina’s small Raku-fired animal figures have been her main financial support for all her art supplies and equipment for many years and it is a wonderful opportunity to learn from this experienced artist, and alumnus of Happy Valley School (now the Besant Hill School of Happy Valley).
Nina de Creeft Ward received her BA from Scripps College and MFA from Claremont University. She has studied with Betty Davenport Ford, Albert Stewart, Phil Dike, Paul Darrow, and Paul Soldner at Scripps and the Graduate School in Claremont.
