Previous Workshop
In the spirit of Matisse and other modernist experimenters (e.g. Picasso, Braque, Schwitters) participants will make collages out of cut paper and simple glue. Highly pigmented acrylic paint will be used to create gorgeous colors that pop, sizzle, hum, and harmonize. Instruction will include aspects of color and design, exercises in freeing the intuitive sense of composition, and looking at inspiring examples from both past and present collage artists.
Workshop participants will mix their own colors, paint paper, cut shapes, and make one to five paper collage paintings (depending on individual speed, amount of detail, size, etc…) The aim of this class is to have a lot of fun while making new discoveries in our own creative processes. Plus, cool pictures to bring home!
Caroline Allen taught literature and creative writing at UCSB’s College of Creative Studies for 30 years while maintaining an active art practice. She works in many mediums and genres, including landscape painting, portraiture, ceramics, comics, print-making, and collage. In her teaching she encourages a playful, uninhibited attitude toward creativity, allowing for the unexpected and embracing the unplanned:
"Make the inner critic step aside and allow yourself to just experiment. Creative work is mysterious. Sometimes it’s a matter of getting the hand moving and the mind follows".
She has taught courses in collage, comics, and painting as well as her literary teaching. Her recent publication include a graphic memoir which she illustrated and co-wrote, “We’ve Never Felt So Unnannoyed: Iceland for the Lady Traveler.” She created collages from which lithographs were made to illustrate Kia Penso’s book of short stories, “The Ghosts,” in the fine art edition published by the Kalamazoo Book Art Center (KBAC). Forthcoming, also by KBAC, is a book of poems by Robin Gadient with original monoprints by Caroline Allen.
