Previous Workshop
Julia Feld
It doesn’t matter if you make pottery or sculptural ceramics, you’re involved with low or high fire processes, have years of studio experience or have just started with clay, you will learn how to boost your ceramics with bright colors.
This hands-on workshop is designed to introduce the painterly surface treatment as an alternative to traditional glazing techniques. Participants will learn how to use underglazes, underglaze pencils and chalks to create multi-layered, colorful imagery.
Participants will practice painting on a simple tile before moving on to three-dimensional forms. Previous experience in painting or drawing are not necessary.
Julia Feld

About the Instructor:
Julia Feld received her BFA in Spatial Arts, from San Jose State University, California and MFA in Visual Arts - Ceramic Sculpture, from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. Currently she teaches at De Anza College, Cupertino and Gavilan College, Gilroy.
For the past nine years she has been an active member of the ceramic art community.
Feld has developed a highly personal style that incorporates narrative painting and ceramic sculpture in one work of art. She paints on clay with underglazes and creates an illusion of interchangeable reality. In her work she explores psychological and emotional issues of a deep personal nature. Her work has been shown internationally and nationally at different shows and galleries; juried into numerous ceramic competitions where she has received prizes and awards.
In her work, Julia Feld combines an abstract curvilinear sculptural ceramic form with surreal, realistically rendered narrative painting. She creates an illusion of dramatically changing transformation between realities. In her work the three-dimensional world formed by painting coexists with the three-dimensionality of the object. She creates an impression of interchangeability between flat image and three-dimensional form.
Julia’s sculptures are vessels that harbor the internal world of a person. Her work is a quest for a three-dimensional space that can hold the imaginary world, world of a broken and twisted perspective. A world remembered or conjured from the past, a world that seamlessly transitions from one dimensionality to the other – a world of a dream.
