Allison Newsome
A central theme in Allison Newsome's work is the relationship between humans and the environment, and how the human psyche has changed with shifts from the wilderness to the agrarian, and into the industrial and post-industrial world. This focus is of particular interest to us, as we are an activity of the Happy Valley Foundation, which cares for 500 acres of land, much of it left untouched as a wildlife corridor.
For over a decade, Newsome has presented an annual workshop at the Center. In this workshop, participants will create works inspired by history and nature, and the three-dimensional works will utilize Newsome's once-fired technique for working in clay, with mixed media. Quite often, Newsome's workshops are attended by past participants, as she always shares new ideas and approaches to utilizing clay, stains and glaze in a painterly approach to sculpture.
This workshop will focus on a technique Allison Newsome calls "Puddingstone-ware". The technique utilizes delicate pre-fired bisqued imagery, which are loaded with glaze and embedded into unfired works . This creative process is closely linked to what occurs naturally in geology in conglomerate sedimentary rock.
In the spirit of a plein-air painting, workshop participants will begin their process by working outside with clay slabs that have imagery drawn onto them with colored slips and stains, a repoussé technique of pushing and paddling material from the reverse side and then manipulating and folding the works, so they can stand three dimensionally on their own. The resulting works will feature bright, glossy fecund imagery, embedded into clay, a juxtaposition of gloss against matte, and delicate against the rough.
