The Joy of Painted Paper Collage:

Symbols, Stories, Icons, and Patterns

A Workshop with Caroline Allen

Saturday, April 5, 2025 / 10 am - 4 pm

From the earliest civilizations through the Renaissance, Modernism, and contemporary art, artists have made use of symbols, some of them universal or iconic (for example, suns, moons, stars), some of them religious or used in magic (the caves of Lacaux animals, the cross, fertility figurines), some of them having to do with national identity (flags, the statue of liberty, the crown) and some of them highly personal (Picasso’s bull and peace dove, Klee’s eyes, fish, animals, and cities, Kara Walker’s enslaved girl silouettes, Matisse’s swimmers and exotic leaves).

Castle’s burning became one of my personal symbols during a time of fire when my house was threatened. Chihuahuas denote something in my psyche having to do with comfort and watchfulness. And why do I make doodles of Italian waiters and movie stars? A yearning for a certain kind of glamour? These are the kinds of things each participant might think about or ask themselves.

In this class we’ll paint beautiful colors onto paper, cut them into shapes, and explore our own worlds of symbols, stories, icons, and patterns, making pieces that may be very abstract or may tell a story or may just suggest a feeling. Some may visually read like poetry, others like a poster.

As always, the real purpose of this course is to help you feel the joy of creating things with colors and shapes.

About the Artist

Caroline Allen taught literature and creative writing at UCSB’s College of Creative Studies for 30 years while maintaining an active art practice. She works in many mediums and genres, including landscape painting, portraiture, ceramics, comics, print-making, and collage. In her teaching she encourages a playful, uninhibited attitude toward creativity, allowing for the unexpected and embracing the unplanned: "Make the inner critic step aside and allow yourself to just experiment. Creative work is mysterious. Sometimes it’s a matter of getting the hand moving and the mind follows".

She has taught courses in collage, comics, and painting as well as her literary teaching. Her recent publication include a graphic memoir which she illustrated and co-wrote, “We’ve Never Felt So Unnannoyed: Iceland for the Lady Traveler.” She created collages from which lithographs were made to illustrate Kia Penso’s book of short stories, “The Ghosts,” in the fine art edition published by the Kalamazoo Book Art Center (KBAC). Forthcoming, also by KBAC, is a book of poems by Robin Gadient with original monoprints by Caroline Allen.
