The Joy of Painted Paper Collage:

Wild Things

A Workshop with Caroline Allen

Saturday, February 22, 2025 / 10 am - 4 pm

Let’s get wild! We’ll mix and paint beautiful colors on paper and cut them into exciting shapes. We can start from anywhere— an idea, a dream, a photograph, a painting. We can make a still life from life, or from imagination. A bouquet of flowers is always fantastic! Landscapes, plants, toys, bowls, musical instruments.

The instructor will set up a few still lifes and bouquets and participants are welcome to bring objects, photos, posters, anything that might inspire them to let their creative muse run wild.

The instructor will bring examples of past and current painted paper collage artists and talk a little bit about color and design. But the class is geared to help you jump into the flow of your own creative joy.

About the Artist

Caroline Allen taught literature and creative writing at UCSB’s College of Creative Studies for 30 years while maintaining an active art practice. She works in many mediums and genres, including landscape painting, portraiture, ceramics, comics, print-making, and collage. In her teaching she encourages a playful, uninhibited attitude toward creativity, allowing for the unexpected and embracing the unplanned: "Make the inner critic step aside and allow yourself to just experiment. Creative work is mysterious. Sometimes it’s a matter of getting the hand moving and the mind follows".

She has taught courses in collage, comics, and painting as well as her literary teaching. Her recent publication include a graphic memoir which she illustrated and co-wrote, “We’ve Never Felt So Unnannoyed: Iceland for the Lady Traveler.” She created collages from which lithographs were made to illustrate Kia Penso’s book of short stories, “The Ghosts,” in the fine art edition published by the Kalamazoo Book Art Center (KBAC). Forthcoming, also by KBAC, is a book of poems by Robin Gadient with original monoprints by Caroline Allen.
