Sgraffito Carving in Clay

Workshop with Lauren Hanson

Sunday, May 27, 2018
1:00 - 4:00 pm

Lauren Hanson
"Song Dynasty" Bottles
(Thrown by Dane Venaas)

These five large collaborative vases were inspired both in form and decoration by the beautiful bottle forms from the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279). They are all wheel thrown by Dane Venaas and designed and carved by Lauren Hanson. The carving technique is known as sgraffito and involves scratching through black slip to reveal the contrasting clay color underneath.

In conjunction with the exhibition Inside/Outside, ceramic artist Lauren Hanson will be presenting a hands-on afternoon workshop sharing her techniques for carving imagery and designs using the sgraffito technique. The artist will provide wheel-thrown "leather-hard" ceramic cups that will be ideal for carving, as well as tools. The cups will be covered with black slip, so that the carved areas will contrast with the color of the clay.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own image references, favorite tools, and their own pieces to carve if they prefer. A variety of images on paper that can be copied or transferred on to cups will also be provided. At the end of the workshop, participants can take their cups home to fire in their own kilns, though there will be option of leaving them at the studio to be bisque fired and then salt-fired or fired with a clear glaze.

Cost $75.00 per person
