Cypriot Antiquities Zoomorphic Deer Rattle by Maryann Cord
Join Maryann Cord for a day of creating modern day artifacts based upon her Cypriot Antiquities Series.
Ancient artifacts show that the rattle has always held an important place in the civilizations of just about every culture. For many the rattle is regarded as the dwelling place of great spirits and ancestors. These rattles pay homage to ancient art from Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean dating back as far as 2000 BC. They represent quintessential Cypriot fusion of indigenous traditions and elements assimilated from the ancient Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, and Romans who one after the other controlled the island through its history.
Participants will be guided through the process of designing and creating their own modern day artifacts.

Maryann Michalski Cord works freestyle sculpting clay with her hands, combining figures and faces - hand built original portraits born of earthen clay expressing spirit, emotion, myth, dreams, and ancient tradition. Utilizing a once-fired method Cord brushes mason stains, oxides, and other pigments directly onto the raw unfired clay in a painterly fashion before firing. From time to time Cord's work pays homage to Beatrice Wood's unique approach to the sculptural forms she called Sophisticated Primitives often portrayed in the nude, and designed to evoke a reaction. A museum enthusiast and avid world traveler, Cord has always been fascinated and inspired by works of art from the ancient world. Her work lives in private collections around the world.
