Sharon Doughtie and Pat Kramer

Sharon Doughtie and Pat Kramer share a studio on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. In separate bodies of work, they celebrate material, form and texture, taking full advantage of the potential of the craft object. Their attention to detail requires the viewer to examine the work from a variety of perspectives and rewards tactile experience. The artists celebrate the bowl form, while embracing simplicity of form, intricate illustration and dramatic use of negative space.

For Doughtie and Kramer, working with wood provides opportunities to exercise the senses and is one of the closest relationships between maker and material that exists. The couple are ideal companions in the studio, creating their separate works together.

“It’s really great sharing workshop space with Pat,” Doughtie says. “Our lathes are perpendicular to each other and we work together in companionable silence. It’s very addicting to be totally in the moment while working on a piece, to the exclusion of everything else. Time, place, hunger, fatigue - it all disappears. I live for those moments of riding the cusp of discovery.”

“The process embodies the essence of creation,” Pat Kramer says. “The dialogue of the wood is an expression that flows through the artist.”
