Lauren Hanson - 2016 Exhibition
"Art and Nature"
Two years after her remarkably successful debut show, The Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts proudly welcomes Lauren Hanson back for this exhibition of recent ceramics. The artist’s new work is based on Lauren’s almost obsessive fascination with the elements of nature, seen in their present state, their past status, and their uncertain future. Lauren’s extensive knowledge of art history enriches her work by often presenting it as it might have been created by artists working in the style of other eras.
A thought, article or personal observation about a plant or creature’s appearance or status, e.g. “creatures affected by drought,” often provides the inspiration for a particular piece and how the initial form is thrown. In developing the shape, Lauren will reach back to the history of art and ceramics, and usually in combination with extensive research about the subject, the process progresses. The resulting pot is also influenced by a multitude of other considerations occurring throughout its creation, ranging from the artistic, technical and mystical. And above all, each piece has been endowed with exceptional care, love and reverence by the artist.
Mughal Animals |
Mughal Animals (Reverse view) |
(Thrown by Dane Venaas)
Salt-fired porecelaneous stoneware with overglaze | 20" h x 11" w | $550. SOLD
"This work is a collaboration with Dane Venaas, who threw it to my specifications, while I added the decorative knob, which is based on the dome on the Taj Mahal. The form is reminiscent of both Indian architecture and pottery forms and the animals on the jar are all commonly seen in Mughal miniature paintings of India and created in a similar style. In researching the animals, I found that, while all were once abundant, they are all endangered, with the exception of the peacock, which is domesticated."
Animals of the Nile II
Salt-fired porcelaneous stoneware
19" h x 9" w | $550. SOLD

“Works in The Drought Series reference America in simpler times. Since these are about drought, I thought it would be fitting to put my ideas on vessels that hold liquid. This work features an old-timey image of the water cycle as I remember seeing it in my childhood science books.”
