The inferno wakens Shi Hu, creature of the kiln. The firing matures the glaze, vitrifies the clay body, softens, blends, bends, and fuses the entirety. The firing represents the birth of each piece. I generally create three works in a series to which I refer as a generation. I appreciate rituals which comfort and provide opportunities for contemplation. Shi Hu as a tea pot is the centerpiece of tea, a ritual, both ancient and modern.
These sculptural female high-fired, thrown porcelain vessels are formed into tea pots and garbed in classic Chinese glazes resulting in a fine netting of crackle and softly melting tones. Each piece is individually formed, the sculpted faces gently brushed with metallic powders which are then protected with multiple layers of lacquer, producing a dewy sheen.
