In this one-day, hands-on workshop, Beth Tate will share how she employs rich textural surfaces to create animated and lively ceramic vessels. Techniques will include layering glazes with reactive and colored slips, sgraffito, and millefiori. Participants will create vessels, utilizing hand-building and/or wheel throwing processes, and the surfaces will reveal themselves using a once-fired process.

The workshop will begin with a Power Point presentation of work by ceramicists who have heavily influenced Beth’s own path these past 25 years, ending with her own pieces. Following the presentation, Beth will demonstrate how to hand build a tripod pot along with surface techniques. Making their own vessels, participants will use texture tools, regular household items, and found objects, to decorate their pots. These pieces will be glazed in their greenware “raw” state with matte glazes with additives and colored slips. Beth will also share how to create and control crater/lava effects.

In the afternoon, Beth will demonstrate two inlay techniques championed by Lana Wilson and Akira Satake . Participants will create inlaid slabs that will be stretched, distorted and slumped to produce functional bowls and wall tiles. These pieces will be fired with a clear or satin matte glaze and will be ready to pick up, or shipping can be arranged.

No previous experience is required.

Cost: $150. (Members $125.) – Includes all materials and a light vegetarian lunch.
