Quilt Experiments Workshop with Kay Khan

Quilt Experiments:
In Search of Our Creative Edge

Workshop with Kay Khan

Saturday & Sunday, November 9 & 10, 2019
10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Creativity is a constant cycle. We play, we edit. In this workshop, you'll experiment and, yes, "play" with ways to build up layers of fabric using quilting, stitching, appliqué, rearranging, deconstructing, and collage.

Participants will begin every day by making at least two 12" square flat panels of thick quilting, using the technique Khan developed and uses in all her work - she quilts first, before stitching any imagery or patterns - the opposite of traditional quilting. These panels are the structures that will function as prepared canvases and be used for experiments. Participants will cut parts out, reconfigure them, and, although in this class they'll be working in two dimensions, they'll start to add three-dimensional elements. Directed exercises will constantly transform the artwork & challenge the participants, as some of the panels will be completely altered. As participants learn new approaches, each will begin to use them in an individual project.

This focus is of particular interest to us, as we are an activity of the Happy Valley Foundation, which cares for 500 acres of land, much of it left untouched as a wildlife corridor.

Participants will create works inspired by history and nature, and the three-dimensional works will utilize Newsome's once-fired technique for working in clay, with mixed media.

Intersection: Sophisitcated Primitivism Workshop

Intersection: Sophisticated Primitivism
Workshop with Kevin Wallace

Saturday, March 23, 2019
1:00 - 4:00 pm

The currents of Primitivism run through contemporary art. The term ‘Primitive’ can be interpreted ethnographically, as a reference to the artifacts of tribal people; and it can be viewed in a derogatory manner, a reference to works that are somehow less sophisticated than those created in the modern world. But once Primitivism was embraced by the great artists of the 20th century - Gauguin, Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani, Klee, Giacometti, amongst others, it came to be viewed with great respect, as an aesthetic designation.

Intersection: Art & The Spirit Workshop

Intersection: Art & The Spirit
Workshop with Kevin Wallace

Saturday, February 23, 2019
1:00 - 4:00 pm

Historically, most religious traditions - from indigenous cultures to the great civilizations - used the arts to enhance the spiritual experience. Most of the body of human artifact which we now refer to as ‘art’ consists of objects used in religious rituals or those that depict religious themes. Due to their strong emotional impact and ability to act immediately and directly upon our perception, the arts have the ability to enhance religious experience, and evoke a sense of transcendence, or the presence of some deeper or divine presence. The arts enhance religious experience by evoking strong emotions that preclude conceptual thought and may even invoke a sense of transcendence or the presence of the divine.
