The Opening Reception was held Saturday, August 31, 2019
Natasha Dikareva was born and raised in Kiev, Ukraine and studied art in St. Petersburg, Russia during the hey-day of Soviet power. The genre of Soviet realism permeated Dikareva's young creative life. The narrow standard of approved art inadvertently pushed Dikareva to develop her own symbolic language. Dikareva immigrated to Minneapolis, USA in 1995 and received her MFA from the University of Minnesota. She now lives and works in San Francisco, California. She won the Grand Prize at the American Museum of Ceramic Art in 2012. She exhibited at the Shanghai Art Expo, as well as at numerous galleries across Europe and the USA. Her work is featured in various publications, including 500 Prints on Clay and New Ceramics European magazine, and is held in public and private collections. She exhibits locally and internationally.

Intersection: Art & Life
Work by select artists featured in the recently published book by
Kevin Wallace, Director of the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts.
Beato Gallery
The Opening Reception was held Saturday, November 10, 2018 / 2 - 5 pm
Art can seem very separate from our daily lives today, and, as our society careens its way through change and conflict, it may seem increasingly irrelevant. Throughout history, art was naturally intertwined with people’s daily lives: a bowl for water, a carving to record a war, objects to capture religion and identity. This book juxtaposes our past with “big ideas” relating to contemporary art, helping to demystify them so that we can repair the connection, and turn our lives into art.

The Cutting Edge:
Contemporary Wood Art and The Lipton Collection
Logan Gallery
The Opening Reception was held
Saturday, September 15, 2018 / 2 - 5 pm
The Cutting Edge: Contemporary Wood Art and The Lipton Collection shares works collected by Dr. Irving Lipton, who was instrumental in developing the careers of leading figures working in wood and bringing attention to their work. As these individuals in turn had a major impact on the field, Dr. Lipton's value as a patron of the arts was invaluable.
Dr. Lipton collected work as it was being created, from the early 1970s through the beginning of the new century, and focused on the artists with whom he maintained personal relationships. These works trace the evolution and emergence of the field of contemporary wood art over the last quarter of the 20th century, documenting the evolution of specific artists as well as the larger field. Ultimately, the collection is defined by Dr. Lipton's interest in the cutting-edge of contemporary wood art.

Gond art is a form of tribal painting that is practiced by one of the largest tribes in India with whom it shares its name. The origin of the Gonds can be traced to the pre-Aryan era. The Gonds traditionally painted on mud walls of their houses. Starting in the early 1980s, certain talented Pardhan Gonds, who traditionally serve as professional Bardic priests, began transforming their ritual performing arts into a new tradition of figurative and narrative visual art. Using a variety of modern media, they have created unprecedented depictions of their natural and mythological worlds, traditional songs and oral histories. Rich in detail, color, mystery and humor, these works employ modern means to evoke the pre-modern psyche.

July 9 - August 13, 2016
Beato Gallery
The Opening Reception was held Saturday, July 9, 2016 / 2 - 5 pm
Iridescence: The Art of Ira Winarsky shares the artist’s reinvention of ceramic sculpture as a means of exploring abstraction, light and reflection. Sculptor and artist Ira Winarsky (1942-2015) spent the last 25 years of his life entirely focused on exploring the potential of the ceramic medium. The artist explored bold new approaches by utilizing clay as a fine art medium in the spirit of George Ohr, Peter Volkous and Kenneth Price, in connection with the concerns of Light and Space artists Robert Irwin and James Turrell. Winarsky spent decades perfecting the difficult and temperamental process of creating iridescent lustre glazes in order to create sculpture that captures nature’s true rainbows and movement, from a shimmering sunset on water, to the delicate prism of a peacock’s feather, to bird’s eye views of the landscape.

Lauren Hanson: Art and Nature
Beato Gallery
Opening Reception was held Saturday, May 7, 2016
Two years after her remarkably successful debut show, The Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts proudly welcomes Lauren Hanson back for this exhibition of recent ceramics. The artist’s new work is based on Lauren’s almost obsessive fascination with the elements of nature, seen in their present state, their past status, and their uncertain future. Lauren’s extensive knowledge of art history enriches her work by often presenting it as it might have been created by artists working in the style of other eras.

Sean Ponder: Journey to Revival
Logan Gallery
Opening Reception was held Saturday, May 7, 2016
Sean Ponder discovered at a young age a desire to help others, which has led him to utilize his artistic ability to address societal issues and pursue life as an educator. Witnessing families torn apart by addiction inspired a series of work that depicts the process of recovery and the resulting transformation. Sean was drawn to clay due to its basic elemental nature, tactile qualities, and processes involved - how water and earth can be formed, and then through the process of firing, become forms that are both functional and artistic. From the composition of clay, to the relationship between the vessel and human form, Ponder explores individual works as well as installations and conceptual works such as Journey to Revival.

Clothing has grown with us since our emergence – from a necessity of survival, to an expression of identity. The works in the exhibition celebrate the life of Beatrice Wood and her contemporaries – what they consciously wore – inspiring interpretive works that speak to philosophy, personal style and legacy.

Work by select artists featured in the recently published book by
Kevin Wallace, Director of the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts.

Gond Art
Logan Gallery
The Opening Reception was held Saturday, July 1, 2017 / 2 - 5 pm

Selections from The Lipton Collection
Logan Gallery
The Opening Reception was held on Saturday, September 6, 2014.
The Lipton Collection showcases Dr. Irving Lipton’s interest in the cutting-edge of contemporary wood art over a period when the field had not yet coalesced into a major movement. Collecting the work as it was being created, from the early 1970s through the beginning of the new century, Dr. Lipton was instrumental in developing the careers of leading figures and bringing attention to their work. As these individuals in turn had a major impact on the field, Dr. Lipton’s value as a patron of the arts was invaluable.
At its height, the Lipton Collection featured over 2,000 works by 115 international artists. The Lipton Family donated works to number of organizations and institutions, with the largest numbers of works divided between five museums across the United States: The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, the Long Beach Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the Yale University Art Gallery.

Lauren Hanson: Illustrative Ceramics
Beato Gallery
The Opening Reception was held Saturday, July 5, 2014.
The illustrative ceramics of Lauren Hanson are born of an early grounding in drawing, painting and art history. While the artist’s approach is considerably different than Beatrice Wood, Hanson finds that they have many similarities, as she too came to ceramics relatively late in life, and has a passion for nature, art books, the human condition, vegetarianism and of course, chocolate. In Hanson’s work, these interests are etched and painted on traditional ceramic forms, reflecting and celebrating the natural world, with scenes featuring birds, plants and trees wrapped around vessel forms.

All Together Now: The Art of Collaboration
Logan Gallery
The Opening Reception was held Saturday, July 5, 2014.
During the summer of 2014, the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts staged an “ART-IN”, inviting visitors and members of the community to collaborate on paintings. Completed works, along with those in process, were included in an exhibition titled All Together Now: Collaborative Paintings, with proceeds from the sale of works supporting the Center’s educational programming.
The event and exhibition were inspired by the work of Liam O’Gallagher and designed to promote collaboration, creativity and community as a means of creating constructive change in the human condition and the planet. As Liam had studied painting in Greenwich Village in the 1940s with Hans Hofmann, who taught a number of leading Abstract Expressionists, the processes employed were inspired by these ideas. The project was also influenced by surrealist techniques for utilizing random chance to work free of conscious control, as well as Eastern approaches to non-attachment – both important aspects of Liam’s life work. As part of our educational programming, this project served to introduce individuals to artistic processes and was open to everyone, from professional artists to “non-artists”.
Due to the success of this event, we are making this collaborative painting project an ongoing activity of the Center, open to individuals or groups. Participants will learn more about Liam O’Gallagher’s work, while opening up to their own potential as conscious creators through hands on experience.
