A rare opportunity usually reserved only for those who have committed years to the serious study of hula. Participants will learn the Oli Mahalo chant which will be taught in the Hawaiian language. Mahalo is a sacred Hawaiian word of thanks and gratitude.
This will be followed by hands-on instruction and guidance to create a gorgeous carnation and marigold flower Lei Poni Mo'i, known as a crown lei.
Participants will then learn a sweet 'auana (modern) hula called Puamana and encouraged and welcomed to perform the hula dance they learned while wearing the crown lei they created.
Immediately following the workshop participants will be treated to a performance by Kumu Hula Sylvia Puanani Edgar.

Hans Weissflog is an internationally acclaimed woodturner, with a distinctive approach to creating bowls and container forms. In this all day event, Hans will discuss his work and demonstrate the techniques he employs in creating his work. Although this is not a “hands on” workshop, some experience with woodturning is recommended.

Delve into the ancient heritage of Goddess worshiping/honoring societies and study images of ancient Venus and Goddess figurines. Participants will then be guided to create their own interpretation working in clay. Participants will be instructed on the use of oxides, underglazes and mason stains to add color and depth in a watercolor-like fashion to the wet clay. The "once-fired" work will air dry and then be kiln-fired for participants to pick up at a later date.

In conjunction with the exhibition Art and Nature, ceramic artist Lauren Hanson will be presenting a hands-on afternoon workshop sharing her techniques for carving imagery and designs in low-relief. The artist will provide wheel-thrown “leather-hard” porcelain cups that will be ideal for carving. Participants are encouraged to bring their own image references, favorite tools, and their own pieces to carve if they prefer. A variety of images on paper that can be copied or transferred on to cups will also be provided.

Kevin Wallace, Director of the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts, will present an afternoon workshop based on Thought Forms, the 1901 book by Annie Besant and Charles Leadbeater that inspired Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Paul Klee and countless other artists.
Participants will explore the ideas that pre-date and inspired abstract painting through insights into the processes of seeing and recording impressions in form and color.

A rare opportunity usually reserved only for those who have committed years to the serious study of hula. Participants will begin by learning the ancient Oli Lei chant, used when a dancer dresses for a performance, which will be taught in the Hawaiian language, with an explanation of the meaning in English.
This will be followed by learning to make an intricately braided Ti-Leaf lei. In ancient Hawaii the Ti-Leaf was planted around dwellings to ward of malevolent spirits, and stalks of Ti-Leaf were also used as flags of truce and peace.

In this workshop, we will build a figure using coil construction with the consideration of the body being a holding place. Assembled parts and attachments and found objects will embellish the form. Students should be prepared with ideas of the position of the figure: standing, sitting...etc. Bring a collection of images as a reference for the figurative form. Surface treatment will be explored by using a painterly approach to the wet clay with engobes and underglazes.
