There will be plenty of time to work on individual projects, as workshop participants are encouraged to bring leather hard pieces suitable for carving and design concepts to work on - yet there will be clay forms prepared and plenty of designs for carving as well. Participants will explore historical and cultural aspects of carving and work on generating their own designs and how those designs can be realized in clay.

“Our motto at the Center is ‘Life is an Art', as I was invited to create the Center following the presentation of Beatrice Wood: The Art of a Life at the Craft & Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles,” says Wallace. “Beatrice Wood truly lived a life in which the arts and the everyday were seamlessly intertwined."
In this workshop, participants will explore Beatrice Wood’s passions – art books, philosophy, drawing, working in clay, preparing food, and conversation – all with a sense of how the most mundane aspects of life can be imbued with creativity. They will work with clay in her studio, utilize her colored pencils to create drawings, and prepare lunch in her kitchen.
At the end of the day, participants will leave the Center with valuable lessons in life and the arts, fully immersed in the world-view and processes of Beatrice Wood.

It's the Centennial Celebration of Dada!
Beginning with a PowerPoint presentation on Dada history and aesthetics, participants will experience hands-on exploration of painting, poetry, collage and assemblage, while learning how to embrace chance and accident as a means of expanding artistic exploration.
This workshop is being presented as part of the Center’s Centennial Celebration of Dada, as Beatrice Wood, Marcel Duchamp, and other artists in New York, as well as Zurich, were creating important works as part of the Dada Movement in 1917, ultimately having a major impact on art history.
At the end of the day, participants will take home the works they created at the Center, having acquired new approaches to creativity and artistic processes.

In this workshop, participants will explore the creative process, with references to both the craft and form of historic masks, and the influence of Dadaism. Conventional craftsmanship in woodworking may be used, but don't plan to be fussing over fit and finish. A safe, yet unorthodox, approach to fine woodworking principles will be utilized to focus on creation and expressiveness. Participants will shape masks out of wood but are invited to bring found objects in line with personal tastes or interests to incorporate. Vintage objects of unknown origin, cut up rubber tires, metal shards... you like it, bring it, and Weidman will assist you in figuring out how to make it work!

In this workshop, participants will explore the process of mosaic, working in the Dada tradition of affection for repurposed and recycled materials. Mosaic Work is a meditative process that works well "as a cure for the madness of our age." (Arp) Participants will create a stunning and strange framed mosaic piece with one priceless artifact – a small luster-glazed clay piece cast from one of Beatrice Wood's original molds. This is an exciting way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Wood’s involvement in the New York Dada Movement and her continuing influence.

Jim Kimo West & Ken Emerson are living legends in the world of Hawaiian slack key and acoustic steel guitar. This is a rare opportunity to study with both master players on the same day, up-close and personal. Played from the heart and soul through the fingers, and flowing with vivid tropical images, Hawaiian slack key is truly one of the great acoustic guitar traditions in the world. In slack key, some of the strings are slacked from the standard tuning, with the thumb playing the bass while the other fingers play the melody and improvise in a finger-picked style.
