In this workshop, participants will learn how to use China paints to add color and design to ceramics. Following a brief history of China painting, including its use by accomplished artists, participants will learn about the materials and processes. What is needed for a China painting kit, and where to purchase supplies. The use of brushes, how to mix and apply the paints, an overview of penwork and how to fire the works will all be covered.
Participants will gain a basic knowledge of what supplies are needed and comfortable enough to make up a pallet and start painting at home.

Jeff Margolin and Fred Yokel have been working in ceramics for decades, as an occupation and passion. While their work and processes differ, both utilize carving techniques to produce highly individualistic work. In this workshop, participants will be exploring a variety of approaches, clays, and tools of the trade. There will be plenty of time to work on individual projects, as workshop participants are encouraged to bring leather hard pieces suitable for carving and design concepts to work on - yet there will be clay forms prepared and plenty of designs for carving as well.

In conjunction with the exhibition Inside/Outside, ceramic artist Lauren Hanson will be presenting a hands-on afternoon workshop sharing her techniques for carving imagery and designs using the sgraffito technique. The artist will provide wheel-thrown “leather-hard” ceramic cups that will be ideal for carving, as well as tools. The cups will be covered with black slip, so that the carved areas will contrast with the color of the clay.

A central theme in Allison Newsome's work is the relationship between humans and the environment, and how the human psyche has changed with shifts from the wilderness to the agrarian, and into the industrial and post-industrial world. This focus is of particular interest to us, as we are an activity of the Happy Valley Foundation, which cares for 500 acres of land, much of it left untouched as a wildlife corridor.
In this workshop, participants will explore the grounds, creating works inspired by specific sites. Exploring the colors, textures, forms, and or history of the site, the three-dimensional works will utilize Newsome's once-fired technique for working in clay, and mixed media.
